Pedestrians in Danger in the Town of Halifax?

The News & Record informs us that the Halifax Police Department will begin aggressively enforcing traffic laws at crosswalks.

Is this really a huge issue in the village? I realize that on court days the town is crowded with cars and pedestrians, but I've never seen anything close to the mayhem that is common in larger areas. Who has actually complained about the issue?

Is David Irby regretting his choice to join the HPD yet? To go from the front lines of the county's major crime fighting force to enforcing crosswalk etiquette and manning the town's speed trap has to be quite a blow to one's moral.

I know I'm full of questions, but inquiring minds want to know!

UPDATE:

Someone emailed me this link. It looks like Fairfax actually has a pedestrian safety problem. I wonder if they would find Halifax's press release humorous?

HN,

I saw this too...and I found it rather comical as well.

Just demonstrates once again the waste of $$$ that that is the HPD. I mean come on, the HCSO is right there.

There is no need for this police department, and this is once again demonstrated by the things they consider as important top priority law enforcement matters.

I will not even address the "speed trap" ridiculousness.

Please, give me a break.

IMRR,

Thanks for the comment.

I wonder if the HPD is a self sustaining entity? Do they procure enough revenue with ticket writing to cover their budget?

Grants and town taxes is my bet.

Not sure if they get county funds.

By Ronald's reasoning, we can dump all of the county police departments. The sheriff can cover it all, right? The sheriff's department can't even cover their own 800 square miles properly with 3 people on a shift.
As for Halifax doing an article in the newspaper, it does sound silly. I think it does serve a purpose though by letting the inconsiderate drivers know the law exists and removing the "I didn't know" clause when they get a ticket.
Finally, since Halifax is a town, it gets its money from the town's taxpayers. You'd think they'd want a police department since a town cop can be anywhere on any call within a few minutes.
I'd also be willing to bet that the police department has to consider minor stuff important if what the newspaper says is true about pedestrians complaining a lot. I also seem to remember an old lady getting hit in Halifax a few years ago in a crosswalk.
As for Irby moving there, I have no clue what got into him. I did ask him why he moved, and he told me it was just time for a change. I seem to remember somebody else saying that before the November election. At least Irby got a promotion out of the deal. It's more than 90 percent of the deputies will ever get.

irby left cause he wanted to be a boss...he got mad when things started taking place with noblin.

thats the deal with that...but why goto hpd to be a boss....they have 4 people that work there...and 3 have rank....

Halifax has always had a PD, and it should....
The people there pay taxes for protection, yes, the HCSO is there, but all towns should have their own PD. When Woody was there it was great, he could solve a minor problem with just talking to the ones involved, and a major problem was solved just as easy. It is what small town is about.
Irby wanted to be a boss, not happening in the HCSO....he is a smart man but not one to be in charge of others. Halifax is not a speed trap, get real.....Anyone who would go fast there is plain dumb............And in the halifaxtalk site someone thought that the HSO could use bicycles is unreal....that person needs to get out and ride one from one end of the county to the other.
