I expect Bill Watson asked for a jury trial. It made the difference between a life sentence, a death sentence and what the guy actually got. Jury recommended forty-four years of his life in exchange for the one he took.
If you're suprised this one went to trial, there's a rape case going to jury trial next week.
I'm sure Mr. Watson asked for a jury trial, as well.
My point was that Mrs. White seems to plead out lots and lots of cases instead of going for a harsher sentence via a jury trial. I think she's very politically minded, possibly eying a much higher political office in her future, therefor it will be to her advantage to have a very high conviction rate. All those pleaded out cases are bolstering her conviction rate and that looks very good when you're running a campaign to be Virginia's Attorney General.
The lame judges in Halifax County seem to always hand out the lightest sentence possible...so her "pleading out" may be a way to ensure they get more years than a judge would give them after allot of work is put into a trial.
Just a guess.
Anon: I agree with the judges being rather lenient, but I don't think that problem is reserved for Halifax County.
I guess, at this point, I can give Mrs. White the benefit of the doubt on this, but I still think she has her eyes on bigger, better things than being the CA in Halifax.

I give her the benefit of the doubt as well. She sees the strength of the cases, the witnesses, and knows the law. I do not.
You are probably right regarding her eying higher places. However one could look at that as s good thing for our area.
1. She will be extra careful not to do anything that might make her look bad in a nomination for a judgeship or a political race.
2. She will be courting influential people in Richmond -
Both of these things are good for Halifax County, as long as she is here.
The Oakes administration did a great job preparing this case for prosecution. They investigated and arrested the suspect within a couple of days of the murder.

have you noticed any major drug cases or major investigations at all, since the Noblin bunch took over?
Wonder where all the drug dealers went?
Well lets see, since "Noblins bunch" took over there has been one murder. And if Im correct that was solved within 6 or so hours.
Maybe that just wasnt quick enough for the public.
As far as the drug arrest goes, I think they are playing catch up since the former admin burnt every single snitch they could before walking out the door. You can think the "great one" for that.
I think "Noblins bunch" is more to promote the entire department with drug arrests being made as oppossed to just patting the back of one particular guy.
There is no need to continue to put the same arrest in the paper every couple weeks making out like its brand new like the old days.
Give it time people, "Noblins bunch" had to clean up a huge mess.
But again "Noblins bunch" is just that. A group working together, which a lot more than you could say about the former bunch....
I don't have a problem with her eying the AG's office or a prominent Bench. My issue is *if* she is pleading out cases, thereby allowing lighter sentences for criminals, just to keep her conviction rate up. I guess no one will ever know. She didn't seem willing to adress the one person on halifaxtalk.com that brought it up.
I am sure the new "great one" Inv. Campbell will straighten out all the wrongs.
The murder case you mentioned about "noblin's bunch" solving, was actually solved by the SBPD.
But, hey do not let the facts get in your way.
and the excuse of blaming Richard for the lack of productive police work within the Noblin administration, is getting rather old.
You can only use that one so long.

Didn't that one almost solve itself? The entire neighborhood knew that those siblings fought like cats and dogs.
It solved itself yes, but that doesnt diminish the job well done.
Im just glad there are only two total murders in the county so far.....

Ok which murder are you unsure about now?
The one at golf course? SOBO solved that and did a fine job.
The one on Cherry Hill? HCSO solved that and did a fine job. Yes the world knew what happened, but ground work had to be done by HCSO.
The one in Paces? Ok that was solved by Pitt Co, the witness to that one went and spilled the beans to Pitt co....Without that info that murder may still be unsolved. So who needs to get the facts straight? The HCSO did what they could with that case, but without the help of Pitt county they had very little..
The great one did a fine job on the press release............
I would be interested to know exactly how many cases are nol prosse'd each year by Kim's office. It seems there is a big give and take between her office and local defense attorneys.
"I'll drop this charge if your guy pleads to this one".
As far as the Cherry Hill murder, the cops show up, the brother is sitting there and confesses to killing sister. Solving that one was so easy, even a cave man could do it.

whats the diff in value as far as running cases to jury or pleads?
The case information should be available if someone wanted to file a FOIA request with Kim White's office.

I think the idea of pleading cases out to save money is ridiculous. That is the one area I don't want corners to be cut. GET THE MOST SEVERE SENTENCE FOR EVERY CRIMINAL THAT COMES ACROSS YOUR DESK!
I think severe sentence are only handed out by juries, so more severe sentences equals more jury trials... equals more tax dollars being spent.
I think the Comm. Attorney pleads a lot of cases to where the defendent gets the low end of the sentencing guidelines (set by the state). Still, I think the office often drops some charges to get someone to plead to others. I think they're in a quandry. Plead it out and get the crook some time or let it go to trial and watch the judges let them walk with suspended time.
I understand the economics of it, but I still don't want the prosecutors to cut corners to save money.
Avoiding the jury also avoids the chance of LOOSING a case, which impacts your conviction rate. The higher your conviction rate, the better your chances of being seated as a judge or winning Attorney General election.
